Applauds article of woman’s plight Thank you so much for exposing a too often occurrence — serious and sometimes deadly infections with breast implants. Infections are but one of many complications that frequently occur. I head an international support group for women harmed by breast implants. I have watched in horror as the public relations machines of the silicone manufacturers have exported not only these dangerous products to Costa Rica, but also their misinformation. Last summer, La Nación printed an article falsely claiming that "silicone is inert" and underplaying the very real risks with breast implants of all kinds. The photos [elsewhere] showing the implants being "sterilized" was especially disconcerting. The high heat can weaken the silicone shells and is not recommended by the manufacturers. In my 8 years of working with thousands of women harmed by breast implants, this woman's experience of a serious and life threatening infection is duplicated worldwide, even by "board certified plastic surgeons" in the United States. Mon 13 Feb 2006 Ilena Rosenthal, director of the San Diego-based Humantics Foundation for Women, the largest breast implant support group in the world, agreed. "The so-called 'studies' that the silicone manufacturers and plastic surgeons rely on are too small, too short and include eliminating the data from the women who removed their implants for any reason. This is madness, such as removing anyone from a lung cancer study who coughed or showed any other symptoms," she said. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WEBMD: FDA Reviews Ban on Silicone Breast Implants Excerpt: Ilena Rosenthal, director of the Humantics Foundation, a group opposed to breast implants, says that "thousands" of women in her organization have serious health problems that they attribute to their breast implants and to silicone. The group is urging the FDA to keep silicone implants off the market for most women. "These are not recallable items, at least without more surgery to get them out.
